Abstract

This research is devoted to an urgent topic of the integration of sustainable development principles and ESG agenda into the activities of higher educational institutions. The authors justify the importance of this process from the perspective of a systemic approach and secondary empirical data from international and Russian research works. The global agenda for sustainable development and green economy is stimulating a fairly serious transformation of society in all areas. The higher education system and the activities of universities are no exception. To meet the demands of the state, business, and population, universities need to change their educational and activity model. The authors present data showing that while access to information is increasing, the value of higher education in society is declining. They also emphasize the crucial role universities play in generating and transferring knowledge and highlight the importance of developing information-based competencies in students. The research examines the main factors determining the need for the ESG agenda in the activities of universities from the perspective of a systemic approach. This research also examines secondary empirical data from foreign and Russian studies, which confirm the relevance of ESG competencies. The authors considered the leading environmental, social, managerial, universal, and specific competencies that universities should develop in students as part of the ESG agenda. Examples of pedagogical technologies for each type of competence are given.
