Abstract

Blockchain technology has received extensive attention in recent years due to its interesting properties (e.g., trustlessness, immutability) and “evolutionary” use cases (e.g., in trade finance, central banks, logistics). This is further amplified by the bull and bear runs of cryptocurrency, which resulted in what Gartner described as the hype cycle of blockchain technology (Litan and Leow, 2019). Large corporates have started to recognize the capabilities of blockchain technology and embarked on the journey to use blockchain technology as the next evolution of their systems. In particular, the financial market has ran forward with its experimentation by working on blockchain technology directly or indirectly (through the support for digital assets). For example, JP Morgan introduced Quorum and JPM Coin for intra-ecosystem settlement, World Bank launched blockchain-powered bonds, BNY Mellon launched its digital asset custody service, TD Ameritrade targeted to launch retail crypto-trading platform, and WeBank is running a blockchain-based digital bank servicing 400m transactions daily for 180m customers…
