US Trends in Farm and Off-Farm Rural Employment

Abstract

Agriculture is one of the most productive sectors in the US economy. The amount of labor used in farming has declined since the early years of farming. The long-term trend of less-farm labor and more of the other farm inputs has allowed farm operators and other family members to allocate more time to off-farm jobs. Most farmers receive income from off-farm work, but small-scale operations rely on off-farm income to sustain their operations. More than half of US farm operations are small-scale and have annual sales of less than $10,000.
