Abstract

Clean energy plays an important role in the eradication of energy poverty. India faces acute energy poverty which impacts income poverty as the poor find it difficult to obtain high-priced clean fuel. Furthermore, India is one of the fastest-growing economies in the world and its energy demands are huge. This chapter is an attempt to analyze the measures taken by the Indian government to eradicate energy poverty and it empirically examines the factors that affect clean cooking fuel adoption in India. The empirical results suggest that spatial, demographic, and income characteristics of the household impact adoption of clean cooking fuel Cooking fuelusage in India; the study also evaluates the state-wise status of adoption and growth of clean energy in India and estimates its impact on the economic development of the states. The study also examines the incentive mechanism of the Government of India and recommends regulatory and policy measures as the way forward.
