Abstract

Zusammenfassung Ein Blick in ein beliebiges Mathematikbuch überzeugt davon, dass Zeichen (Symbole, Diagramme, Formeln, Graphiken) in der Mathematik eine wichtige Rolle spielen. Oft wird diese allerdings primär als Veranschaulichung oder Darstellung von im Prinzip abstrakten Objekten gesehen. Demgegenüber wird hier dafür argumentiert, die operative Zeichenpraxis, also das Arbeiten in und mit Zeichensystemen nach Regeln, ontologisch, epistemologisch und didaktisch in den Vordergrund zu stellen. Pointiert: Mathematisches Denken erfolgt am Papier durch die Handhabung von Zeichen, die damit nicht mentales Denken bloß ausdrücken. Dies beruht auch darauf, dass (mathematische) Zeichen nicht nur Werkzeug, sondern auch ganz wesentlich Gegenstand des Denkens, Untersuchens, Erforschens und Beobachtens sind.
