Abstract

Zusammenfassung Females’ participation in areas long considered to be male domains has improved over time. Nevertheless, gender differences in performance continue to be reported in large scale mathematics achievement data. In contemporary research literature, reference is frequently made to the impact of pervasive societal beliefs about gender linked capabilities on students’ performance. et the public’s views are sought directly all too rarely. In this paper we focus on the public’s perceptions about mathematics and the gendering of mathematics. Data were gathered from pedestrians as they walked in the street and via the social network website Facebook.
