Abstract

Zusammenfassung Dieser Teil ist das umfangreichste dieses Sammelwerks. Es versammelt acht Vertreter der im weitesten Sinne „mathematischen“ Statistik. Diese liefert die Werkzeuge, mit denen die Statistik die Wirklichkeiten dieser Erde modelliert, quantifiziert und prognostiziert. Was aber viele nicht wissen: Diese mathematische Statistik hatte in Deutschland lange einen schweren Stand. Der Psychologe Peter Hofstätter etwa erinnert sich, dass sein Habilverfahren noch in den 1940er-Jahren abschlägig beschieden wurde, weil er gewisse „dem deutschen Geist völlig fremde [statistische] Methoden“ in seinen Arbeiten verwendet hätte (Hofstätter 1993).
