Using Maths Competition Problems at Camps

Abstract

In this paper, I propose that problems from maths competitions are well suited to teaching mathematically gifted learners reasoning and to be active learners, based on observations from Camps for talented 14–15-year-olds. The learners and the camps are presented, as well as the Georg Mohr Contest problems used. The learners’ reactions to maths competition problems are compared to the teaching goals of activity and reasoning and fleshed out in 10 problem examples. Lastly, the move from solving to posing problems is illustrated with Maths Fairs, a common concluding activity on a Maths Camp.
