Abstract

Zusammenfassung Anknüpfend an Arbeiten aus den 1970er Jahren wird die Vielschichtigkeit der Beziehung von Mathematik und Gesellschaft diskutiert. Mathematische Bearbeitungen praktischer Probleme haben sich häufig als nicht sehr effizient erwiesen (Beispiel Ballistik), in der Mathematik selbst aber bedeutende Entwicklungen angestoßen. Dennoch war das immer stärkere Eindringen der Mathematik in die Ausbildung von Spezialisten und von breiteren Bevölkerungsschichten letztlich eine unabdingbare Bedingung für die Industrialisierung im 19. Jahrhundert. Dies wird abschließend am Beispiel der Humboldtschen Bildungsreform in Preußen erörtert.
