Abstract

Zusammenfassung Die Beziehung zwischen Mathematik und Gesellschaft geht weit über die Anwendungen der Mathematik als Hilfsmittel im Alltag oder als Werkzeug zur Beschreibung, Prognose und Optimierung in Naturwissenschaften, Technik und Wirtschaft hinaus. Mathematische Bildung ist essentiell für die Ausbildung mündiger Bürger, fähiger Fachkräfte und eine Grundlage von Studierfähigkeit über alle Fächer hinweg. Obendrein ist die Entwicklung der Mathematik eine über Jahrtausende gewachsene Kulturleistung, die von Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftlern geleistet wird, die ihrerseits in der Gesellschaft verwurzelt sind. Weil diese Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler die Entwicklung und Ausgestaltung der Mathematik prägen, wird in manchen philosophischen Beiträgen die Mathematik sogar als „soziokulturelles Konstrukt“ dargestellt.
