Experimental Study on the Parameters That Cause River-Blocking by Debris Flow

Abstract

Debris flow is a kind of non-Newtonian fluid, which is famous for its large particles. When debris flow confluences with Main River, solid material of debris flow will be deposit in the conjunction area. Some large particles can not be moved by the Main River and which can cause the water level blocking up of the up reach of the river. River-blocking is the extreme status that is caused by debris flow when it confronts with the Main River, which often can cause secondary disaster. In this study, based on the experiment, the parameters that would affect River-blocking are studied. Through the analysis of each parameter, it is found that larger conjunction angle, larger discharge and stronger debris flow would cause river blocking easier. The specific gravity of debris flow had parabolic-type influence on river blocking. The max mum river blocking occurs at the intermediate specific gravity of debris flow.
