Abstract

Liquid-storage tanks, which are most widely used to reserve rinsing, sewerage , petroleum and chemistry liquid etc., are broadly applied in such industry corporations as water-supply and drainage industry, sewerage-disposal industry, petroleum industry, chemistry industry and so on. For the sake of calculating dominant earthquake response of these structures, the characteristics of their free vibration have to be known beforehand like frequency of free vibration and corresponding oscillation mode. In this paper, the equations of oscillation-mode and frequency based on bending-shearing model are formulated for the cases of empty liquid-storage tanks. At the same time, the calculation tables of the first three oscillation modes are presented by using MATLAB program to facilitate a convenient application in engineering, and the functions for free-vibration frequency and oscillation mode are derived. The result is further explained by calculation example, and can be provided as a theoretical basis for the analysis of subsequent earthquake response of this type of structure.
