Abstract

This chapter discusses human factors critical to the workplace as it evolves through digital and physical realms of distributed work landscapes. Led by the experiences of Australian organisations and knowledge workers, it proposes reasons to address affordances and constraints of personal resources in the work equation more closely (from HRM, organisational and employee-led perspectives), viewing the issue through a temporal lens to aid responsive, sustainable and meaningful design of future workplace environments. Highlighting unknowns, gaps and drawbacks of human–technology interaction the authors propose a temporal approach grounded in space–time methodology and principles of time-geography to explore work from a relational perspective investigating ways qualities and capabilities of physical and digital workplaces can combine to optimise human value and the social value of work. It highlights the current strength of both physical and digital realms and (under) utilisation of both in organisations’ approach solving issues related to distributed working. Opportunities of technology and physical environments are discussed with future implications for workplace designers, management and individuals.
