Abstract

Through our lives we face risks which may appear scary and threatening. Estimating risks is often experienced as difficult. This is important when we make decisions about how to take actions and order our lives. In many cases risks can be measured based on statistical evidence. However, such measures may be difficult to grasp. Sometimes the difficulties are intrinsic and sometimes the difficulties may be inherent in the representations and formalisms used to represent them. In this chapter we describe particular practices for understanding features of civic statistics and for communicating risks and uncertainties visually, using simple, transparent representations, which foster intuition and are easily grasped. These tools become handy for modelling risky situations and making decisions that can lead to better informed action. Children should acquire basic skills for dealing with risks and in this chapter we intend to show that this can be done in a playful way and that primary school students can acquire the first elements of riskRisk literacy.
