Who Takes Elementary Mathematics Courses? Why? A Guess, and Some Problems for Change

Abstract

The sort of statement I would like to be able to fill this paper with is this: “There are presently 72,500 undergraduates taking calculus because they know they need that mathematical background for graduate work for an MBA.” It would be even more satisfying to add: “If a course in mathematics were planned specifically for the needs of the MBA, then 173,400 students each year would elect it.”
