Abstract

This chapter explores halal healthcare tourism in India, encompassing alcohol- and pork-free medicines and food, gender-segregated patient treatment, and prayer facilities. Medical centers in countries like India, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand cater to global Muslim populations with halal-certified healthcare services. India's exceptional medical infrastructure and internationally aligned healthcare personnel make it a favored destination for medical tourists, who are also drawn by alternative treatments like Unani medicine, Ayurveda, and Yoga. The cost advantage of treatment in India attracts Muslim tourists from Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and other countries, resulting in numerous hospitals in India meeting the specific needs of Muslim patients. While India shows promise in healthcare tourism, challenges such as Islamophobia, limited halal awareness, and potential resistance from non-halal sectors hinder its growth. Recommendations include raising awareness of halal practices among Muslims and non-Muslims to foster informed decision-making and prevent rejection of halal health care. As the halal healthcare industry in India is still in its infancy, its future evolution remains uncertain.
