Leader’s Positive Humour and Employee Turnover Intention—Role of Employee Engagement and Job Satisfaction as Mediators

Abstract

This study examines the mediating role of employee engagement (EE) and employee job satisfaction (EJS) in the relationship between leaders’ positive humour (LPH) and employee turnover intention (ETI) among hotel employees. Data was obtained from 272 employees of two four-star hotels and three five-star hotels located in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, India. The mediating roles of employee engagement and job satisfaction with other constructs were analysed using PROCESSMACRO. The results of this study indicate that LPH has a statistically significant impact on JS, EE, and ETI. This study provides evidence that employee engagement is a more proximal predictor of employee turnover intention than job satisfaction. Both job satisfaction and employee engagement mediate the relationship between LPH and ETI. The study results indicate that LPH in the hospitality industry favours employee engagement and job satisfaction and reduces employee turnover intention.
