Abstract

Aircraft maintenance has long been a critical yet traditionally conservative field in aviation. The aviation sector is experiencing a major shift due to the adoption of Industry 4.0 (I4.0) technologies. In the rapidly evolving landscape of aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO), the adoption of I4.0 technologies has become crucial for sustainable growth and competitiveness. This paper addresses the challenge of selecting appropriate Industry 4.0 technologies for aircraft MRO in a market flooded with options and proposes a structured approach to technology selection, tailored specifically for the aerospace industry by giving priorities to the potential I4.0 technologies and then rank them using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). Six emerging Industry 4.0 technologies have been identified as pivotal in transforming and automating aircraft maintenance processes. Research methodology consists of three key phases that includes conduct of a comprehensive analysis of the various I4.0 technologies for MRO environment, employment of Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), an MCDM model to weigh various factors influencing technology selection and finally analyzing and evaluating the results to guide decision-making for selection of best technologies for aircraft MRO. The results showcase how our approach will help MRO managers navigate the complex landscape of Industry 4.0 technologies, enabling them to make knowledgeable decisions aligned with their strategic goals. This paper contributes to the field by offering a robust, industry-specific framework for technology selection in aircraft MRO, addressing the unique challenges and opportunities presented by I4.0 in aerospace maintenance, repair and overall operations.
