Abstract

The IT sector is very demanding due to its dynamic evolution. Companies must have the ability to adapt to different circumstances in order to succeed. Understanding how the leader can contribute to employee satisfaction is a key issue, which can contribute to company success in the sector. This study aims to investigate how the leadership style within an IT company impacts employee satisfaction. It required the collection of qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data was obtained through interviews with leaders of IT companies in Portugal and was analyzed using the WebQDA software. The quantitative data was obtained through questionnaires distributed among employees of the same IT companies and members of the “general population” working in the sector in question. The quantitative data was analyzed using the SPSS v.29. With this study, it was possible to understand the leadership style of each leader, as well as the perceptions of each employee regarding their leader. The study concluded that there was no specific relationship between leadership style and levels of satisfaction. However, in IT companies where a combination of transformational and transactional leadership was applied, higher levels of satisfaction were observed. For the “general population” working in the IT sector, greater satisfaction was associated with transactional behaviors.
