Exploring Critical Factors of Sustainable Human Resource Management in Higher Educational Institutions: A Systematic Literature Review

Sustainable Human Resource Management (S-HRM) in HEIs is making significant strides as an important paradigm focused on the attainment of institutional sustainability, employee well-being, and long-term academic performance. In this study, the multifaceted elements supporting Sustainable Human Resource Management (S-HRM) in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are examined. Few studies have systematically investigated S-HRM practices that are suited for the academic setting, though, sustainability’s increasing significance in organisational discourse. To determine the economic, social, and environmental elements that are essential to HR sustainability in HEIs, this study examines sixty-three peer-reviewed publications that were obtained from Scopus using a systematic literature review (SLR) methodology that is in line with PRISMA guidelines. The findings indicate that while well-being, moral HR practices and employee engagement are primary social enablers, employee development, strategic HR alignment, and talent management are the primary economic drivers. Environmentally conscious performance metrics and green HRM practices are essential. This holistic framework do gives importance to how sustainable human resource practices are aligned with Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG 4 that focuses on inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all. The research in this paper offers useful advice to Hr Executives and top management to incorporate and include sustainability into policies and strategies of the institution.
