Competition via Alliances: Strategic Patterns Employed by Multinational Corporations in the Telecommunications Industry

Abstract

This paper reviews strategic patterns employed by multinational corporations in the telecommunications industry. Some strategic patterns include focus, best products, customer-oriented solutions, lock-in measures, strategic alliances. It is anticipated that the trend of competition through alliances will continue to exist as long as the multinational telecom companies continue to contend with a worldwide marketplace that rewards scale economies, multilateral competition, and the seamless delivery of integrated content to customers who are making increasingly demanding demands of global telecom services. As the industry continues to draw new rivals, it is also vital for the global firms that are currently operating to conduct a reconsideration of the market. These worldwide telecommunications enterprises are notable for the absence of the Bell Operating Companies (BOCs) of the United States (with the exception of Sprint), as well as NTT. As a result of the inter-LATA constraints, the BOCs in the United States have been prevented from becoming global carriers.
