Quantitative Software Process Improvement Program Using Lean Methodology

Abstract

Organizations often observe that a process improvement journey is quite long (1 ~ 3 years) and find it difficult to demonstrate quantitative benefits until the journey is complete. At times, demonstrating quantitative benefits even after completion of process improvement program is challenging. Also, the practitioners start experiencing improvements and realizing the benefits much later in the journey. Seldom the program benefits are determined and communicated in the organization due to lack of methods to quantify. These characteristics of process program design inhibit process improvement programs in the organization, due to its inability to garner management and practitioners’ support. In this context, this paper presents our experience from quantitative-based process improvement programs using lean methodology. Significance of a quantitative-based process improvement program while designing the program and integrating quantitative-based approach in the process improvement methodology is being discussed. Design of such program has resulted in demonstrating benefits and gaining support from management and acceptance from practitioners.
