Abstract

Business performance of almost every organization throughout the world depends on information technology. Hence, there is huge requirement for reliable and good-quality software. Rigorous testing improves reliability but costs a lot and delays the release. Good and strong releases lead to good reputations and profitability, while late or fault ridden releases increase costs and harm branding. To avoid delay in software release, new software companies bring release early and keep fixing the remaining faults in operational phase by bringing new patches. A patch is a small software code which is designed to update a computer program, to fix or improve it. A continuous model has limited application in various real-life problems working on discrete-time data. Hence, a discrete-time model has been formulated to obtain the software release and patching time. In this paper an optimization problem has been formulated for determining the optimum time of software release and patch release to minimize the overall testing cost and maximize reliability. Numerical illustration based on real-life tandem computers data set using logistic distribution is provided to validate the proposed framework.
