Abstract

The key purpose of the railway reforms in the European Union is the strengthening of rail in the transport market through market liberalization and promotion of intra-modal competition. Poland, as a country applying for access to the European Union, had to adapt the rules of rail transport in place to the standards in force within the Community. Since the changes introduced in the year 2000, there have been numerous passenger and freight carriers active on the normal rail infrastructure network. Nevertheless, the expected effects of the reform have not fully occurred yet. The purpose of this article is to present the current structure of the rail market and the performance of both passenger and freight rail transport in Poland as a result of the railway reforms to date.
