Medical Device Price and Valuation

Abstract

This paper deals with disunity in approaches towards what should be considered an adequate price of a medical device, what are its components and above all, how should a medical device be valued. Such a valuation is crucial for designing medical care reimbursement schemes, for health technology assessment (HTA) calculations and also for innovative medical device producers’ investment decisions. The present paper analyses the components of medical device prices and presents some medical device valuation and pricing methods. Reimbursement and early-stage decisions involving the Bayesian prior are covered. Options valuation method and pay-for-performance are described. Specificities of the medical device market and industry are closely examined. Revenue-oriented method is put forward as a possible way of medical device valuation.
