Abstract

This chapter examines frequency market connectedness along the US pork supply chain with the utilization of alternative measures of spillovers for the prices at the farm, wholesale, and retail level. Data are monthly observations for the time period between 1990:1–2024:12. The rolling window approach, for the dynamic analysis, has been employed. The empirical results indicate that connectedness in the system of markets farm-wholesale is stronger relative to that of wholesale-retail. There is evidence of symmetry in price spillovers between the farm and the wholesale markets, with respect to the origin of the price shock as well as with respect to the different frequencies. For the wholesale-retail market pair, the findings reveal asymmetry with respect to the origin of the price shock and symmetry with respect to the different forecast horizons. Price shocks from the wholesale market explain 80% of the forecast variance in the retail market, but price shocks in the retail market cannot explain any of the forecast in the wholesale market. The dynamic analysis reveals that, for every time period and in every window investigated, price shocks in the retail level do not explain any of the forecast variance in the wholesale market, but wholesale does explain movement in the retail market. In the light of the empirical findings of the present work, one may conclude that retailers might enjoy an advantage over wholesalers along the US pork marketing chain.
