Abstract

ABSTRACT Entrepreneurship in transitional economies such as Vietnam is profoundly shaped by culture. Unlike universalist assumptions that treat entrepreneurship as a standardized economic function, this study demonstrates that Vietnamese entrepreneurs blend traditional values with modern practices in ways that reflect historical continuity, social expectations, and global pressures. Drawing on 110 structured interviews and thematic analysis using ATLAS.ti, the study identifies key cultural values – family orientation, perseverance, community solidarity, education, and trust – as central to entrepreneurial decision-making. Findings reveal that while these values nurture loyalty, resilience, and long-term stakeholder relationships, they also generate tensions around meritocracy, transparency, and innovation. By situating the Vietnamese case within broader cultural-entrepreneurship scholarship, the paper argues for a nuanced understanding of entrepreneurial identity that is culturally embedded yet globally adaptive. The contribution lies in showing how entrepreneurs in Vietnam reinterpret Confucian ethics and communal traditions in pursuit of modern competitiveness, creating a hybrid business model with both opportunities and risks.
