Abstract

The paper adopts the smart sustainability approach to analyze the possibilities offered by improved availability of tourism demand data derived from mobile phone tracking for measuring the waste generated by tourism demand. A coastal destination with the characteristic features of a predominance of non-hotel accommodation and seasonal demand is analyzed as a case study, where the availability of new data sources is particularly relevant given the chronic lack of reliable tourism statistics. The results reinforce the need for empirical analyses tailored to each destination rather than generic a priori estimates. Measurement is undoubtedly a key factor in waste management that affects the governance of destinations, both in terms of reducing environmental impact and financing waste management services. In this sense, the results obtained reflect greater efficiency in waste management in a context of weak sustainability and the lack of development of an integrated circular economy strategy. The analysis also suggests a review of the waste management requirements and indicators specific to smart tourist destination models.
