Abstract

This study uses the PRISMA framework to examine how South African higher education adopts Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) technologies. From 850 peer-reviewed articles, 63 from 2011-2024 were analysed, focusing on artificial intelligence, big data, robotics, and IoT, and their impact on education and skills. Key themes include institutional readiness, challenges, and the socioeconomic context. Findings highlight the need to address infrastructure gaps, build capacity, and develop strategies for equitable integration of 4IR in higher education.
