Abstract

This paper assesses the economic and environmental impacts of a mobile crowdsourcing model for last-mile delivery in South Africa’s e-grocery sector. Unlike traditional models that introduce additional vehicles, this approach leverages existing commuter traffic. A simulation-based methodology is used to quantify its effects, applied to a case study of a major South African distributor. Findings highlight the model’s potential to reduce distance travelled, lower CO2 emissions, lower costs, and support sustainable logistics in urban, rural, and township areas, The study provides insights into how mobile crowdsourcing can transform last-mile delivery in developing regions, while balancing economic viability and environmental responsibility.
