From “Traditional” Grocery Carts to Smart Carts: Which Technologies and Applications?

Abstract

The shopping cart is an essential part of the retail grocery shopping process. Among emerging solutions to improve the in-store customer experience, several models of connected shopping cart are being introduced in the retail sector. But the design and development of such a cart remains the subject of much speculation regarding core functionalities and technologies that could drive consumer decision-making when it comes to grocery purchases. The main objective of the research is to identify the core functionalities and technologies that should be integrated into a the “smart cart of the future”. For this purpose, a design science approach was followed, including (i) a literature review and (ii) questionnaires administered at the 2023 Euroshop a trade fair held in Germany (iii) followed by the design and development of an “affordable” smart cart prototype equipped with RFID-IoT technologies. The prototype has been developed in living laboratory settings to better understand the technical feasibility of such smart cards.
