Even Gender Distribution Across Departments and Firm Performance: Evidence from Manufacturing Industry

Abstract

This study examines the effect of even gender distribution across departments on firm performance in South Korea’s manufacturing sector using Human Capital Corporate Panel data (2020–2023). Results show that even gender distribution is positively associated with sales and return on assets, though the effect on operating profit is insignificant. The benefits are concentrated in low-tech industries, where performance relies heavily on cross-departmental collaboration and communication. Furthermore, effective vertical communication strengthens these positive effects, highlighting the importance of organizational information flow. Overall, the findings extend gender diversity research by emphasizing structural distribution as a key driver of firm performance.
