The Role of Organizational Theories in Understanding Circular Ecosystems

Abstract

Recent studies have aimed to understand the transition to the circular economy and its implementation through the lens of ecosystems. However, this remains an emerging topic in the literature. Through a systematic and qualitative review of 48 journal articles, this study seeks to contribute to the field by examining how organizational theories contribute to understanding circular ecosystems. The main findings of this study reveal that stakeholder theory, and the resource-based view are the most applied traditional perspectives, emphasizing collaboration and resource optimization. Additionally, theories such as dynamic capabilities, complex adaptive systems and complexity theory offer valuable contributions to the field of circular ecosystems. A bibliometric analysis is also employed, which reveals the growth of the field since 2019, with a focus on qualitative methods. This study advances the circular ecosystem literature by synthesizing existing theoretical applications and identifying research gaps.
