The Role of Open Innovation in the Resilience of Innovation Ecosystems in Emerging Countries: A Case Study on Brazil and Colombia

Abstract

Innovation ecosystems (IE) are pivotal in fostering economic growth and innovation capacity, particularly in emerging economies th[at face elevated uncertainties and vulnerabilities. This study explores the role of open innovation (OI) in enhancing the resilience of IEs during periods of crisis, with a focus on Brazil and Colombia. Resilience, defined as the ability of an ecosystem to absorb shocks and adapt to external changes, is critical for sustaining innovation-driven growth in these contexts. This research adopts a qualitative approach, employing case studies of innovation ecosystems in Brazil and Colombia. Data collection involved interviews with ecosystem stakeholders, including industry leaders, government officials, and academic researchers, complemented by secondary data analysis. The findings reveal that OI mechanisms, such as collaborative networks, co-development initiatives, and external knowledge sourcing, significantly contribute to ecosystem resilience. These mechanisms enable faster adaptation, resource mobilization, and innovation continuity during crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
