From Invention to Market: Lessons from Globally Excellent Universities in Technology Transfer and Academic Entrepreneurship

Abstract

Technology Transfer Offices (TTOs) play a crucial role in bridging academia and industry, facilitating the commercialization of university-generated intellectual property. This study analyzes six globally recognized universities with established TTOs, identifying key institutional and managerial factors that drive their performance. Findings highlight that mature innovation ecosystems, robust research investments, and a strong entrepreneurial culture contribute significantly to technology transfer success. Additionally, universities that strategically align TTO operations with institutional goals foster a seamless path from invention to market. The study also underscores the growing role of startups in technology commercialization, particularly as traditional licensing agreements with large corporations decline. By providing best practices, this research offers valuable insights for university administrators, policymakers, and TTO managers aiming to optimize innovation strategies. Future research should expand to include additional global institutions, allowing for a comparative analysis of external environmental influences on TTO performance.
