Exploring Complementary Pathways for Translation of Research to Impact: Insights from the i2I Program in Canada

Abstract

This paper explores the impact of the invention to innovation (i2I) training program, created in 2014 to address the asymmetry between the number of graduate students and academic jobs in Canada, and the lack of entrepreneurial capacity in researchers, which is a significant factor in Canadian underperformance in research commercialization. This article presents ongoing research whose objective is to understand the characteristics of the people pursuing the variety of pathways required for commercialization, including translational scientists, venture founders and industry champions. Analyzing data from past program participants, our preliminary results support three pathways, show a number of past participants on several pathways at the same time, and indicate the possible existence of a cross-cutting subgroup for researchers who assume mandates related innovation intermediaries, such as non-government organizations, lab or network leaders, employees in technology transfer offices or incubators.
