From Research to Market: CNEN’s Nuclear Innovation and Sustainable Development Strategy

Abstract

Technological innovation is a promising solution to global sustainability challenges. The National Nuclear Energy Commission (CNEN) of Brazil has played a fundamental role in developing nuclear technologies applied to strategic sectors such as industry, agriculture, the environment, and health. This article refers to the role of innovation in the nuclear sector and its transdisciplinary applications, aiming to understand how they contribute to Brazil’s sustainable development. The methodology includes characterizing CNEN’s technology portfolio over the past five years, considering both patented and unprotected innovations. Additionally, a network analysis was conducted to identify connections among researchers, fostering new innovative opportunities. The results highlight the most promising and mature technologies, which combine innovation, sustainability, and market potential, driving significant advances in the transition toward a more sustainable and technologically advanced development in Brazil.
