The Moderating Role of Digital Technologies in the Relationship Between Resilience and Social Sustainability in the Fashion Supply Chain

Abstract

Growing scholarly attention has been directed toward understanding the nexus between supply chain resilience and sustainability, particularly considering the transformative role of digital technologies in strengthening this relationship. This study examines the moderating effect of digital tools on the relationship between resilience and social sustainability, with specific emphasis on the resilience dimensions of agility and collaboration. Adopting a cross-sectional research design, data were collected through a structured survey administered to actors within the Bangladeshi fashion supply chain (FSC). The proposed hypotheses were tested using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The empirical findings indicate that agility and collaboration significantly influence social sustainability, and that digital tools positively moderate these relationships. Notably, the moderating effect is stronger for the collaboration–social sustainability link than for agility–social sustainability. These results underscore the critical role of digital technologies in amplifying the sustainability benefits of resilience capabilities. This study offers empirical support for how digital tools might improve social sustainability, providing practitioners and scholars with insightful information.
