Abstract

Internet of Things (IoT) is one of the strongest trends in digital transformation. Although many companies are adopting IoT technologies to enable innovative business models, there is a high percentage of project failures. That said, while there is no clear consensus on IoT success factors, upfront project management appears essential (feasibility study, prototyping, pilot project). On the other hand, although there is a great deal of research into IT project management, the cyber-physical aspect of IoT projects makes them more challenging than expected and managers need to get prepared for it. The aim of this research is therefore to contribute to a better understanding of the upfront project management process as key success factors of IoT projects by elaborating on the role of prototyping IoT artefacts to bridge the gap from concept to reality. To carry out this research, we adopt a methodological approach based on design science research grounded on a specific case in the industry 5.0 context supply chain.
