Unlocking Traceability: Data Governance as the Key to Supply Chain Success

Abstract

Supply chain (SC) traceability is valuable for ensuring transparency, efficiency, and compliance across interconnected organizations. However, existing traceability frameworks often lack alignment with SC goals or integration with data governance (DG) principles. This paper explores how DG can enhance SC traceability frameworks by bridging strategic objectives with operational data management (DM) practices. Using a systematic literature review of 57 publications on inter-organizational DG (IODG) and DG frameworks, we identify six key areas where DG contributes to value creation in SC traceability. These include aligning traceability with SC strategy, structuring DM processes, and enabling collaboration through defined roles and responsibilities. We also highlight gaps in current frameworks, such as insufficient emphasis on data-sharing agreements and data quality. Our findings from the literature provide actionable insights for practitioners while proposing future research directions to develop comprehensive SC traceability frameworks that leverage DG principles.
