Abstract

The adoption of emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, automation, drones, robotics and the Internet of Things, is critical for improving productivity, efficiency, safety, and competitiveness in mining. Countries such as Australia and Canada have made significant strides in integrating these technologies. However, the South African mining industry has been slower to adopt, raising concerns about its declining prospects and global competitiveness. Employee and organisational readiness are key influencing factors. This study investigated the factors influencing readiness in South Africa’s mining industry through a quantitative survey of 194 respondents. Findings revealed that while employee readiness supports adoption, its impact is limited. Perceived technology benefits enhanced readiness, while usability played a lesser role. Organisational readiness, driven by leadership, structure, and external factors, was crucial for adoption. The study underscored the necessity of strengthening employee and organisational preparedness to maximise the benefits of emerging technologies in the industry.
