Which Type of International Connections Enhance Innovation Performance in Canadian Firms? – Can Artificial Intelligence Act as a Moderator?

Abstract

This paper explores the impact of various types of international connections, including innovation partnerships, business ties, and control and workforce groups, on the innovation performance of Canadian companies. Additionally, it examines the potential moderating effect of artificial intelligence (AI) adoption on these relationships. By leveraging multiple survey and registry datasets from official Canadian sources, our findings reveal that different types of connections have varying effects on product and process innovation. Furthermore, AI can bridge cognitive, geographical, and social gaps between Canadian companies and business partners from countries such as China, thereby enhancing the influence of business connections on the likelihood of product and process innovation in Canada.
