From Triangle to Hexagon: Modeling Key Criteria for New Product Development Performance in SMEs

Abstract

New product development (NPD) is vital for the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), yet high failure rates of NPD projects persist due to resource constraints and risks. This study explores how five SMEs manage NPD project performance during the process. Grounded in the theory of constraints, it identifies ten key indicators across financial, operational, and commercial dimensions. Findings reveal that SMEs go beyond traditional cost, time, and quality indicators, integrating broader criteria to enhance project success. A hexagonal model of criteria is proposed, reflecting this complexity.
