Effects of Number and Variety of Multiple Team Membership on Individual Learning and Individual Performance

Abstract

This research investigates how multiple team memberships (MTMs) impact individual learning and performance, particularly as people increasingly collaborate across multiple teams in today’s dynamic work environment. The study hypothesized that the relationship between an individual’s innovative performance and the number of MTMs would follow an inverted-U pattern. A similar relationship was expected between the number of MTMs and individual learning. Additionally, the study proposed that a greater variety of MTMs could negatively impact individual performance, while positively correlating with individual learning. It is found that an increased variety of MTMs is negatively related to individual performance. Furthermore, the research identifies social skills, cognitive skills, and emotional skills as significant positive moderators in these dynamics. The study concludes with recommendations for organizations on how to structure team memberships to enhance learning and performance, while reducing cognitive and emotional overload through effective task design.
