The Green Economy in Romania: Context, Challenges, and Demo-Economic Perspectives

In the context of the green economy transition and sustainable development, understanding the impact of demographic changes on this process becomes essential. The shift toward a green economy provides viable solutions to pressing environmental and economic challenges by fostering growth that is both inclusive and ecologically responsible. This study aims to assess Romania’s current position in this transition and to explore the relationship between energy consumption and pollution levels through the application of the Pearson correlation coefficient. The analysis reveals that there is a negative correlation between per capita CO₂ emissions and per capita renewable energy consumption, suggesting that increased use of renewable energy contributes to lower emissions. Conversely, a very strong positive correlation is observed between per capita CO₂ emissions and electricity production from fossil fuels, indicating the harmful environmental impact of conventional energy sources. These findings underscore the beneficial role of renewable energy in reducing pollution and emphasize the urgency of reducing reliance on fossil fuels. The transition to a green economy is inherently complex, requiring coordinated international action and broad societal engagement. Romania can actively contribute to this transformation by implementing sustainable policies and investing strategically in green sectors, thereby supporting the development of a resilient and future-oriented economy.
