Cultural Services, Tourism, and Resilience

Abstract

This paper highlights the interrelation between tourism/recreation and ecosystem services (ES) by using resilience as a boundary object. A scoping review of 56 papers (2004–2022) found that tourism/recreation was generally studied by using a unidimensional perspective. About half of the ES papers perceived tourism/recreation as a benefit of cultural services (CS). The discussion of resilience did not refer to the full range of impacts of tourism/recreation on ES and did not address how other drivers of change, such as development. The conclusions indicate the importance of incorporating tourism in ES projects, beyond the limitations of CS. This cooperation can support system thinking and enhance the socio-ecological resilience of ecosystems and communities in the face of future disturbances.
