Abstract

This paper investigates apitourism as a niche form of regenerative and sustainable tourism, examining its potential to foster rural development, preserve intangible heritage, and promote environmental education in underexplored contexts such as Morocco. Employing a systematic literature review of the Scopus database (2000–2025) to ensure an interdisciplinary and diachronic perspective, the study is further enriched by a contextual analysis of Morocco, drawing on gray literature, data from the Moroccan Ministry of Agriculture, and a case study of a local apitourism initiative. As one of the first systematic examinations of apitourism within the Moroccan context, this research bridges global academic insights with local empirical evidence, integrating scientific literature and policy-oriented data to explore its strategic relevance for North African rural development. The findings reveal that while Morocco possesses considerable but underdeveloped potential in apitourism, the sector already contributes to economic diversification, supports community-based entrepreneurship, and strengthens cultural identity through traditional beekeeping practices. The study underscores critical future needs, including cross-regional comparative analyses, standardized assessment frameworks, inclusive governance mechanisms, and further research into climate resilience and visitor experiences. It concludes that, when tailored to local contexts and underpinned by supportive policies, apitourism can emerge as a low-impact, replicable model for sustainable rural development and cultural continuity.
