Abstract

Demographic desertification and the decline of rural areas are both universal and alarming. Repopulation policies are ineffective in the face of the considerable appeal of large metropolises. The rising environmental awareness has led these new spaces to emerge as new destinations. Indeed, creative communities are innovating by offering new experiences, drawing on local resources and rural life: agritourism, apitourism, farming, etc. are ushering in a new era for rural areas. Thanks to their social innovation and collaborative digital technology, these communities have easier access to markets and can open new paths that might have seemed trivial and uninteresting. This chapter explores the creative aspects of rural tourism and the possibilities offered by digitalization to open new rural destinations in remote areas. Based on two practical cases of farms in Morocco and Portugal, it reveals the process and determinants of this new path as well as the positive perception of tourists.
