Using Virtual Reality for Earthquake Evacuation Education and Behavior Analysis System

Abstract

Virtual reality (VR) has emerged as an important educational tool in recent years. Earthquakes are major natural disasters in many countries, and since they are unpredictable, adequate earthquake evacuation training is crucial for reducing casualties. To simulate earthquake scenarios, provide effective evacuation training, and analyze participants’ behaviors during training, this project develops a VR-based earthquake evacuation education and behavior analysis system. Utilizing historical earthquake data, the system recreates realistic earthquake scenarios. Its functionalities include (1) VR earthquake evacuation education system development and (2) evacuation behavior data upload. The findings reveal that when participants first attempted without evacuation guidance, approximately 90% of participants demonstrated only basic crouching behavior without the ability to identify safe spots, highlighting the need for evacuation training systems to incorporate cognitive strategies and diverse scenarios to enhance behavioral adaptability across environments.
