Portable Virtual Reality Interactions: Unlocking the Versatility of Virtual Reality Overlays

Abstract

Virtual Reality Overlays (VROs) represent an emerging class of applications that enhance primary VR experiences by layering independent, interactive functionalities within the same immersive environment. Unlike traditional VR or Augmented Reality (AR), VROs run as separate processes within VR systems, enabling multitasking, modular reuse, and real-time data integration. This paper examines the conceptual and functional distinctions between VROs and related XR technologies, arguing that current AR/VR taxonomies do not adequately capture the unique characteristics of VROs. Through an empirical analysis of platforms that provide VROs, we categorize existing VRO applications into specific functionalities they provide. Through our review, we identify design patterns and best practices as guidelines for practitioners and researchers who wish to leverage VROs and build scalable and portable VR applications. Our findings underscore the potential of VROs across domains such as research, entertainment, and urban planning, and highlight key areas for future development and investigation in applying VROs for immersive design.
